Achieving The Best Reflexed Airfoils for Flying Wing use in the Small Plane Categories

Dropping this here because it's relevant to the post. Peter Wick, who has done a lot of RC design and modelling with flying wings, has written a book on flying wing design and posted it for the world to see. It is geared towards small Reynolds / RC stuff, but it's worth perusing, especially for...

Just how fast was the SR-71?

I remember in a propulsion course in college our professor gave us a problem to work based on the SR-71. We had to find maximum speed based on geometry and available material properties. I remember the limit was due to inlet temperatures, and it was faster than the published numbers, but that...

That sounds kind of like the Lake Amphibian setup.

    Single-door cabin?

I'm not a fan of the single door on our club Cherokee. Being on the side of a low wing makes it an awkward dance to get in and out, and there's enough structure to get in the way but not so much that you have good handholds to support yourself in the process. I also feel like I'm adding...

?have any aeroplanes had missile-esque folding wings before

SDB I has the neat wing arrangement, but I'm partial to the folding mechanisms on HAAWC. When folded the wings lay flat along the "fuselage", leading edge down / trailing edge up. Single pivot axis gets them out to the flight position. I've seen some homebuilts like Kolb with a similar stowed...

    Thoughts/experiences on financing an airplane

Too few people understand the difference between purchase price and cost of ownership. The $100k aircraft might very well cost less than the $50k airplane, especially if the plan is to sell at some point. Seems like you get it, so you've got that going for you.

    Thoughts/experiences on financing an airplane

Reading through some of these comments, I apparently have a different take on what an individual is able to afford. Being able to pay for something with cash is a good thing, but actually doing that isn't always the best idea. It sounds like you're considering a plane that's within your means...

    Anyone assemble a Propeller list?

Kitplanes publishes a prop buyers guide. They do other too, like the engine buyers guide.

    methyl methacrylate (MMA)

GESchwarz has done some really impressive testing with aluminum bonding, including MMA's. Here's a link to the old thread.

EAB Accidents Vs. Age of Aircraft

Off topic a bit, but I've found ChatGPT to be a great tool for teaching me how to analyze data in excel (as well as lots of other things). You just talk to it like a very smart assistant and explain what you're after and it'll usually sort it out for you. For instance tell it "I've got an excel...

    912 in place of A-65

It only sounds different idling around on the ground. At takeoff power you mostly hear the prop and in flight you don't really hear them at all. Edit to add, that's from someone standing on the ground. It definitely sounds different in the cockpit.

    Fleas on Floats

I just noticed the Mignet Aviation website shows an HM-1000 Balerit on floats. If you're really interested it might be worth contacting them to ask about it.

Carb Ice protection with electric heaters?

Forgive my lack of carb experience, but does this all imply that methods of heating the carb body only don't work at all? For instance, the marketing for the cozycarb for the Rotax 912 says that it keeps the carb warm enough that ice won't stick/accumulate. I think the implication is that ice...

Carb Ice protection with electric heaters?

You might be thinking of the Culver Props / Valley Engineering carb heat scheme they used on the v-twin engines. I remember seeing pictures online, but they're pretty hard to find now. This info sheet has a small picture you can blow up to kind of see what's going on...

Headsets - brands, tips, recommendations, etc.

I mostly fly a Piper Warrior II, but have used them in a 172, a Bonanza, and a SportCruiser. I wouldn't consider any of those very noisy. That said, the Halo is basically ear plugs with a small hole used to pipe sound directly into your ear. The headset comes with maybe a dozen different...

Headsets - brands, tips, recommendations, etc.

I have a Lightspeed Zulu 3 that I really like, but it's been relegated to backup/passenger headset. I've since bought a QT Halo, and it took some fiddling to find an earpiece that I liked but now that I have I find myself reaching for it every time I fly. No batteries to worry about, super...

    PVC protective sheet on aluminum

Can you get a nozzle from an air compressor under the edge of the film and blow air between the film and sheet? Or maybe take it outside and hit the edge with a pressure washer? I've never done either, just ideas.

Question for engineer type. Tapered gear leg.

Those pictures might be a little misleading to folks without a mechanics of materials background. In the first image that's only showing the linear portion of force and deflection that area under the curve is energy that will be released again once the load is removed and the structure springs...
