René Fournier goes 103 years old...today

What a wonderful announcement! Great man and great airplanes. I guess Leonard Milholland (Legal Eagles) might be the 2nd oldest designer. He is scheduled to hit 100 in a couple of months.

    fuselage welding

Here is a photo showing the relative size difference among three torches. After JB-Welding brass fittings and check valves to a $10 Chinese torch I shortened the tip tube to make it more user friendly on aircraft fuselage work (2nd pic).

    fuselage welding

As suggested by another member, this is the torch to get..... Smith AW1A. Sometimes you can find them used on Internet sales sites. I got mine a few years ago with three tips for $50

    Stewart Systems Alternates/substitutes

Interesting point, TFF. I noticed the Fastbond's consistency changed quite a bit after a few months of opening and closing the container. I decided to order only quart sizes for my Legal Eagle project so I could always use fresh Fastbond.

    Stewart Systems Alternates/substitutes

I agree with rv7charlie. The aroma/odor reminds me of Elmer's School Glue. Very mild.

    Stewart Systems Alternates/substitutes

You can also get 3M FastBond in a neutral color. I put a few drops of yellow food coloring in mine and the finished product looks pretty good. Jay Dub made some very good points about FastBond. Two of my friends building Legal Eagle ultralights are using green Fastbond and are very happy with...

Change.org: Urge the FAA to Address the Deficit of Ultralight Aircraft Instructors

If we get the FAA involved in revising Ultralight regulations, I think we will regret it.

    Sandlin Gliders: Builds, mods, flights

Cheapest way, other than getting chain from junkyard, is buy 10-foot #60 chain and break it to get side plates. My buddy & I bought a 10-ft chain for $24 and used a chain breaker. I forget how many links we got, but it was enough for two Legal Eagles.

    Sandlin Gliders: Builds, mods, flights

Look at motorcycle drive chain links. Legal Eagle builder used these for a lot of his cables. Very strong (hardened steel). #60 chain master link.

    Ultralight covering prep tips

Poly-Fiber P-66 anti-chafe cut into 1/2" wide strips. The adhesive tape I tried at first had some sort of coating on the outside that things did not stick to all that well. Photo is of Legal Eagle XL rudder.

    New wing

Splicing plywood to make long sections for Legal Eagle is easy. I used a belt sander and sanded scarf joints into my 3.2 mm ply. I used three, 4-foot long pieces and one, 16-inch piece for each spar. I have three epoxied scarf joints in each spar web.

Rivetted Al fuel tank - help please?

My tank is not aluminum but I added a drain by installing a 1/4" thick aluminum plate into my fiberglass tank bottom. I tapped the plate for the drain. Could be riveted into your tank floor.

How to make trailing edge longerons outa wood ?

Yes, I used a table saw. I have a nice bandsaw but it could not cut a 5/8" x 1" strip of spruce down the middle like my table saw. I just set the blade angle to split the spruce into two even size strips.

How to make trailing edge longerons outa wood ?

Legal Eagle XL trailing edge is solid spruce strip on first seven ribs and a second spruce strip on the aileron. It is supposed to be 3/8" tapering to 1/16" over a 1" width. I made mine taper to 1/8" at rear.

    Front & rear spar bending

How about 317,514kg gross takeoff weight for 747? That's 700,000 pounds. It can go higher.
