Airplane For Sale Spotted: 1941 Stinson in KY. Dang.

Have you seen one of these in person? It's a 3 seater or a 2+1 and they are a good bit bigger than other 2 place trainers. It's about the size of a Colt or even bigger but instead of an O-235 you've got a 90 hp franklin.

Airplane For Sale Spotted: 1941 Stinson in KY. Dang.

This plane has been for sale off and on for years. I imagine it has to be a dog with a 90hp franklin and then you have the problem of keeping parts available for the franklin. I personally don't care for warbirds like this. I would be much more interested if it had a nice paint job vs the...

Why is GA continuing its demise?

My unpopular opinion... there are too many options for the market size. Do we really need 50 different takes on the Piper Cub? We all know if done right (cough cough Vans cough) economy of scale works in favor of reducing cost. One of the reasons Vans was such a success is because they had no...

Why is GA continuing its demise?

Is GA really dying? The airports seem as busy as I ever remember them being. I am seeing a lot more young people, hangar waiting list years out, ramps full. Airventure seems to set new records every year. The arrival has turned to pure chaos and it seems every year they are looking for new...

    Lycoming o290D

There is no question the 290 was a great engine, arguably better than the 235. If they wanted to kill off an engine the 235 is what should have gone. They would then have a more logical engine lineup. 100-116 IO-233 200ish lbs. 125-140 hp 290 at 250ish lbs and the 150-160 hp 320 at 265 ish lbs.

    Lycoming o290D

I totally agree if you admit that your plane is worth 5-15k with the engine on it. I spoke with a guy a few weeks ago with a Pitts S-1C with an O-290-D2 in it that he wanted 35k for. S-1C's barely bring 25k with 320's on them, with the 290 on it maybe 15k.

    Lycoming o290D

That's the problem, you can't buy all the parts. They are an abandoned engine that is being held together by serviceable used parts. Very few people would use it on a new project and the people that have airplanes with them already on them will likely swap it out for a 320 when it goes bad...

    Lycoming o290D

You simply can’t get some parts like cylinders. The RV guys have moved on from 320’s so they are starting to be more affordable and available. The 290 was a good engine but leave the remaining parts for the certified guys who have to have them.

    Lycoming o290D

I’m curious, why?? Are you talking about collecting parts for an existing engine or putting one on a new build?

    Lycoming o290D

In that case it's worth way more to you than anyone else. If it was a D2 someone might pay 3-4k just for a good cam if they need it!

    Lycoming o290D

That's a tough one to answer. Not sure I've ever seen one totally rebuilt for sale. There is a guy that has been trying to sell a disassembled engine with yellow tagged parts for $2500 for a while now. I've seen low time ones for 5k pop up. The catch is they are relatively low in demand but...

    C85 Stroker still 85hp?

Agreed. I think arguing C90 vs O200 is splitting hairs. C85 is definitely down on power to the O200. C85 stroker without a doubt makes more HP and TQ than the C85 but probably within the tolerance allowed for rating an engine's HP so they don't have to change it. I recall there being...

    C85 Stroker still 85hp?

HP is primarily driven by rpm. Limit the rpm and you limit the HP. Most people will tell you the stroker feels stronger and that is no doubt due to the additional tq driving the same propeller. As for comparing an 85,90, or 200 there are so many other factors it's hard to draw a conclusion...

    White Lightning Flight Report

Never flown a WL but I can say most high performance go fast planes handle like poo bellow 120kts. The Venture totally transforms into a different airplane after 145 kts. These compromises in pursuit of outright speed are why experimental air missiles are just a blip on the history chart these...

    Continental vs Lycoming shops?

I'm not a fan of Triad, their prop shop is good but I've seen poor results from their engine shop. LyCon is good, Airworx, Don's Dream machines is probably the small Continental experts. I've been really happy with G&N as well.

New to me Stits Playboy ….modified ?

You are talking about thousands of pounds, not 100 lbs.

New to me Stits Playboy ….modified ?

Weight has nothing to do with it. It's all about speed range. 72x58 will likely be too much for it. Call a prop manufacturer once you get accurate baseline numbers for your current propeller and tell them your goal and let them advise.

New to me Stits Playboy ….modified ?

The Grumman Yankee is similar in speed to what you are hoping for. The c2c planes use 7153 through 7157 props. Safe to say you are underpropped.

New to me Stits Playboy ….modified ?

Depending on which model 235 you have 2500 rpm might be the cruise power setting depending on atmosphere conditions. What RPM do you see wide open straight and level? If you enjoy tinkering keep going, I doubt you will see the claimed numbers without going to extreme measures. Enjoy it for...

New to me Stits Playboy ….modified ?

Yea back then designers were extremely optimistic. I just talked to dad, his had an A65. He doesn't remember the stall speed but his cruised about 90 mph. His had a canopy but no wheel pants. I suspect your air speed is a little off. A metal prop would perform better but want help your nose...
