    912 in place of A-65

Reason not to go that way? The nasty sound of a 912, somewhere between a cement mixer and a snowmobile. A decent Corvair conversion (WW) would be my choice of modern engine but another A65 would be best.

    Hoffman X-4 Mullet Skiff

That’s a good photo, from the time before it became an amphib. I have attached a couple more but I’m interested to know if there’s any articles about it. I’m a member of EAA but haven’t found anything in back issued of Sport Aviation yet. There’s a lot of PDF magazines to go through!

    Hoffman X-4 Mullet Skiff

I've found a few photos and a short youtube video about this aircraft. It started out as a C-85 powered flying boat and was then rebuilt with tailwheel amphib gear and an O-235. Does anyone know much more or have any articles they could post on here? It looks to be a very practical machine.

The Aeronca C2 appears to fit the criteria. It's an amazingly efficient machine.

Praga E.114 Air Baby restoration & flight

Good suggestion, I’ll run a builders log on this site when the project is properly underway. My projects always start with gathering piles of parts and there’s a decent stock already. Most of the aircraft is there by weight, just has to be converted from workshop stock to flying machine!

    Suitable airframes for industrial engines?

Having read the article again I think Hoover meant ERW. Certainly ERW is way cheaper than 4130 here in the UK and his argument was that commercial grade steels were suitable for inexpensive non-aerobatic aircraft. Obviously it isn’t as strong but for a flivver, would .049 ERW be OK instead of...

    Suitable airframes for industrial engines?

Lots of inspiration and vintage ultralights in this series. Don’t discount using DOM steel tube, it’s cheap, light and easy to weld with gas, TIG or MIG. The late Robert Hoover wrote an article called ‘Flying On The Cheap’, all about using mild steel DOM instead of expensive 4130. Aluminium tube...

    Suitable airframes for industrial engines?

The Aeronca C2 and C3 have remarkable performance for such low powered machines. I’ve flown several hundred hours in my C3 and have a C2 in the shop. The high aspect ratio wing is very efficient and the Aeronca E113 (or JAP J99 for an Englishman) provides honest horsepower at a sensible...
