    Lets discus TV

I'll add that damping (energy removal via slipping belts or other schemes) is actually counterproductive in a torsionally "soft" drive. Vibration transmissibility at engine rpm above resonance is reduced with increasing rpm and least damping.

Engine hasnt run in 15 years

The propeller runs at one half crank speed. Tiara 6-285 is rated 285 hp at 4000 rpm continuous. Most of the production was installed in Piper Pawnee Brave agplanes; if any of those are still in service, the operators must be desperate for parts. Many were converted to IO-720. As I recall, the...

    Opposed piston engine re-visit

I found this timing map on some British VW TDI forum, so I don't know the source or accuracy of the info. It looks mostly reasonable to me. I think the Skoda is one of the highest fuel rate models of the 4 cylinder TDI. It appears that large fuel additions per cycle, if the computer allows it...

    stick welding?

Not only Stinson, apparently. This photo from the Aeronca factory shows 1935 K and L airframes along with a motor-generator arc welder and not an O-A torch in sight.

    Aluminum Casting

Forklift and other vehicle propane tanks are designed to deliver liquid fuel out the hose, whereas the other type (BBQ, RVs) delivers vapor and in fact has an automatic valve that shuts off the fuel if the tank is tipped enough to get liquid at the outlet (in North America, anyway). The cast...

Yes. Buy or borrow this book: CASTING ALUMINUM C.W. Ammen 1985 1st ED 2nd Printing CAST ALUMINUM (more is not better wrt Ammens's books; they are mostly the same except this one focuses on aluminum). I built an electric furnace with perlite insulation, vertically placed firebricks cut for...

    Hello, worried dad here

I don't see the harm in his designing an ultralight or two or five. It will dovetail with his studies. That he designs a flying machine doesn't mean it will get built and flown. The objective is to learn.

Yet another VW power argument. Again.

I've posted this shot before from the Jan. 1977 edition of Implement and Tractor Red Book which is presumably based on VW factory literature: From this I conclude that VW was not comfortable with providing warranty on the Type 1 industrial engine at more than 46 continuous horsepower, while...

    Materials and hardware conversion question

If the only difference between 2 screws is grade 8.8 or grade 12.9, both will enlongate the same amount at any given torque up to the point that the 8.8 spring yields. The 12.9 spring will stretch farther at higher torque, providing greater clamping force up to the point that it yields. E is the...
