Mostly me, but my 15 year old son Ryan is becoming quite good at layups. It helps to use the right hardener for the temperature as well.

Still cranking away. Working on wing skins now.

Hey All, I took a bit of a break after the air races in September, I'm trying hard to avoid project burnout. I was kind of at a dead end anyway, I need to get the wing built to make any more significant progress. Good news though, Friday I picked up my upper wing molds from my CNC guy. He was...

Hey All, Impulse made its first public appearance the past weekend at the ESA workshop at Skylark North glider port in Techapi, CA. I now have the cowl and canopy rough fit and all one color. I will have it on display at Reno for the races in the F-1 hangar if anyone wants to come by and say...

Bingo. 60% of a race lap is under G in the turn, this is the condition I have optimized for.

Thank you. This is the first plane I have designed that will be carrying a person (me) so I am trying to be as careful and thorough as possible. A big part of that is realizing I don't know everything and surrounding myself with people smarter than me. I'm always learning.

In short, yes. The fuse tools are 12 layers of carbon, and are supported by the steel frame bracing. I checked before and during the infusion, no warping or sagging that I could detect.

Typical F-1's have no trim system. They usually shim the stab to dial in the incidence though as you pointed out. The stick forces are so light I'm told trim is not really an issue, but I have no experience flying an F-1 yet. For mine, I first figured out the zero pitching moment of the fuselage...

Thanks for the input, I see what you are saying now. I'm confident in my structures guy, and if the load test, GVT and analysis say otherwise I'm open to changing things.

Thanks for taking a look. As far as the torsional stiffness of the tail, the FEA says its overkill, its very stiff. Compared it to a welded tube stab on say a Cassutt, its overkill. At any rate, I will conduct a static load test, and a GVT and flutter analysis is also in the works by an outside...

I've finished all the exterior seams and fitting the canopy. I'm working on the cowl fit/mount now then I can get some primer on the top side. Also I have been asked to give a talk (Molded Composites in the Home Workshop) at the Experimental Soaring Association's Western Work Shop in Tehachapi...

Canopy is bonded in now and fits reasonably well. Next up is to get the cowl mounted. Red

Still inching forward, but passed a pretty big milestone today freeing the fuselage and tail from the molds for the final time. Next up is finishing all the external tape seams, fitting the cockpit surround and canopy then the cowl. Red New YT vid is up too.

Too bad it's not around any longer, that would be ideal.

What makes an airplane go faster?

Correlation is not causation. It was not an issue before because it had not been tried. They were open to it until John Parker was tossed severely in the JP-350. It was actually known tongue in cheek as the Parker Rule. To sum it all up, what makes an airplane go faster? Excess thrust.

What makes an airplane go faster?

Uhhhh...no. The minimum weight was added 100% for safety. The wake thrown by a Sea Fury going 450+ is no joke and will toss a Lancair/Glasair etc. like a leaf. Even the mustangs and others don't like the wake from the heavy unlimiteds, hence Miss A having a terrible time passing Dreadnought...

Meanwhile in Northern California my buddy Erich has been cutting the wing plugs from 3lb tooling foam. Ones these are finished and polished I’ll pull carbon molds from them. I’m doing this way to control CTE and also have a chance of moving them around my shop without a crane. Red

Still plodding along, not as fast as I’d like though. Some weekend commitments have hampered my time in the shop, but that’s ok. I’m still moving forward. I laid up the tail spar and got it bonded in place, along with all of the ribs. I’ve started to build the torque rod linkage for the...
