Open Source PSRU Design -- Is it possible without personal liability to contributors?

From an old post: Digikey has many to choose from. No noise, no signal conditioning necessary.

    Boxer style crankshafts ?

Detroit Diesel 12V-92. Two 6V-92 engines joined. I have heard, but cannot verify, that they were available with center drive. I do remember an instructor at diesel school saying that they were produced with center drive for mining equipment.

VW Heads for Aircraft - Billet

What a great find! You know, I took the engine apart in my old 911 once and don't remember those. I really feel dumb forgetting those. Thanks again.

OK somehow I just posted that before I was done! I was going to say that all of the above is just one example of trying to make everything fit on an existing engine. 2. I have managed to make Mastercam agree to machine all of the features that I have designed. Not trivial. Mastercam is...

Update on progress. Even though I haven't posted in a couple of weeks, development is ongoing. Actually, going very well. 1. All of the physical parameters required to make a real head have been identified (hopefully!) and integrated into the design. It's a little hard to explain so I'll use an...

What is the general consensus about the cylinder head temp sensor. Specifically; 1. Where to put it? The more specific the answer the better. 2. What sensor? Part numbers are good, at least a physical description of the required interface. Hole size, depth, thread, et cetera.

I agree completely. We're not trying to get Honda level HP/cubic inch. My unofficial goal would to be able to get a reliable 80 HP for all day cruising. My first consideration is safety. In this context that would mean maximum reliability of the cylinder head. Barring mechanical failure of the...

VW Heads for Aircraft - Billet

Oddly enough I tend to agree, with a couple of caveats. Until you're casting tens or hundreds a day your reject rate is going to be 30-40%. The tooling required to cast the fins in place will be prohibitively expensive using traditional foundry/tooling techniques. As in hundreds of thousands of...

VW Heads for Aircraft - Billet

Time to discuss details. After several design iterations I have convinced myself that it is possible and feasible to produce a billet head through standard CNC machining. With enough fixturing it can be done on a 3-axis machine. A 4-axis would be easier and eliminate about half of the fixtures...

Thanks for the heads up. Just looked closely and saw what you mean. Just one more really weird thing about that engine. Guess i'll have to find a tappet now so I can locate the pushrod in the offset bore. Oh well.

The attached drawing is from the first batch of numbers pulled from an actual head. Just pushrod tube hole locations. I have an old but brand new engine case that I'm jigging up right now. Going to get the pushrod hole locations, left and right side, so that I can figure the pushrod angles. By...

VW Heads for Aircraft - Billet

I should have a head in the next couple of days. My plan is to get as many accurate numbers off of the head as I can and then try to modify one of the 'pretty picture' head models from the internet. Modify as in put features exactly where they really go +/- .001. I'll post the results/model...

Thanks for that info. My concerns are much abated. Now back to the hunt for rocker arms. :)

I would think not. At least my goal is to make replacing heads as simple as possible and with as few changes as possible.

You are absolutely correct. When a valve is opened 25% of it's diameter the curtain area will equal the area of the valve face, not counting the stem area. Flow bench and real world testing have shown that increasing valve lift to 28 or 29% will result in significant flow gains. It is generally...

VW Heads for Aircraft - Billet

One of my preliminary design goals is that people wishing to use the proposed head should not have to split their cases to install the head. The goal is to be able to remove the old head, bolt on the new head, drop in new pushrods and be ready to run. Probably with new intake and exhaust or at...
