    transportation and material source questions

Many threads do. (Drift, that is.) I wonder what that says about us...

    MPH, Knots, or metric?

Fractions of 60 are okay. Fractions of 10 are even better.

    MPH, Knots, or metric?

Voted knots, but only because all my nav stuff is in nautical miles and it's a PITA to try to convert units in the cockpit :gig:

    raven 2xs

Cute. What platform are you modeling with? (And have you started load testing the structure within it?)

    Push-Pull powerplant

Unless you happen to be the PDB standing where that jettisoned engine happens to land, sure... ;)

    Solidworks aircraft design...

Yeah? And? I was doing 3D AutoCAD models of Trident submarines using AutoCAD R.10 for the Dept. of Defense in 1989. It probably wasn't the ideal tool for the job (especially after I got introduced to CATIA 2 years later) but I wasn't the one who landed the contract. The way I read Apollo's...

    Malliga Speedbird, quite the pusher

Nice. Apparently my high school German hasn't fled me entirely: I was able to follow the majority of the specification paper at the other end of the link.

    Solidworks aircraft design...

You are aware that with the introduction of parametric constraints to AutoCAD in 2006, 3D modeling in AutoCAD is 85%-90% indistinguishable from Inventor, and 100% compatible, right? With the designs I'm currently modeling, my fastest workflow usually comes from creating the original dumb solids...

    50HP, 5000USD two-stroker

Hirth F23 2-stroke seems to meet your criteria pretty exactly. 50hp. Basic engine + electric start and diaphragm carb for ~$5100. Options for fuel and/or oil injection.

    5083 vs 6061

Heck; when I was working for the "Lazy-B", we made our E/E bay racks out of 5052. A lot of our "non-structural" applications were in grade 5052 aluminum (2024 and 7071 were our primary structural grades, back then. Of course, with everything going to composites these days...)

    Anger Management

I think I originally saw that joke perhaps 15 years ago. It hearkens back to a simpler age, when men didn't need a frackin' attorney to resolve the butt hurt in their lives. As such, it's always been a favorite of mine. :gig:

Garrett JFS 100-13A Turboshaft engine in homebuilt aircraft?

Reading the article I linked to carefully, it says that the power plant in question isn't an APU - intended for use on the ground, primarily - but a STARTER. The difference is that the JFS-100 was tested at altitudes up to 30,000 feet. The article also describes the choice of the CH-701 as the...

What climb rate/angle is considered safe/unsafe?

Downdrafts happen at all altitudes, my friend.

Garrett JFS 100-13A Turboshaft engine in homebuilt aircraft?

...or, a report of the conversion process was written up in the April 2013 EAA Experimenter e-magazine. Interesting reading, to be sure.

What? You mean you don't? [/sarc]

    Hi Y'all...

Name's Jeff.Been a lurker here for a while. Finally got "brave" enough to open my yap (hopefully not to insert my foot, but we shall see). Many moons ago I did 5 years with the engineering department of the "Lazy-B"; now I design and build for my own enjoyment (less stress that way). I have...

Considering buying an experimental 701 that is not flight tested

I'm not saying that the seller's financial concerns wouldn't, couldn't or shouldn't be their reason for the sale before fly-off. All I'm saying is that it would be cause for me to look much deeper into the whole project before committing to anything. Like I said, if the plane is bought and...

Considering buying an experimental 701 that is not flight tested

Sorry; as a guy who's getting current on the installment plan right now, if the plane is built, and an airworthiness cert has been issued - at least pending the successful fly off hours - then lack of liquidity in the short term doesn't sound like a reason I'd accept without a few more...

Considering buying an experimental 701 that is not flight tested

About the only valid reasons that come immediately to mind - the ones that wouldn't scare the crud out of me, that is - are "lost my medical" or "the other half says get rid of it". Just about anything else would make me think at least twice about the rationality of this transaction.

Experimental Aviation. Maintaining the status quo or on the bleeding edge?

I would dare say that most of us here are involved in experimental aircraft because the status quo was unacceptable to us (as indicated by the running results of the poll). After all, if we were interested in the status quo, we'd all be content boring holes in the sky with plain vanilla Cessnas...
