    Sealing Wood Structures

Not meaning to hijack a thread, but my wood airplane project was brushed with 3 coats of Poly-Fiber UV-550 2 part urethane varnish back in the 1980's. This product can still be bought at a hefty price. Should I brush on a couple coats of the Poly-Fiber EV-400 epoxy over top of it, or are the...

    Popped Longeron Joint - Repairable?

I bought an abandoned Osprey 2 amphib project that had sat in a hanger for almost 30 years. I have a similar problem but my issue is I have spots where the plywood skin has pulled away from a few rib capstrips. The separation is also clean with no wood fibers. My plan is to sand down the epoxy...

I need an old school epoxy expert....

I did check there. They have a listing for D.E.R. 330 but I don't really know if this is the same formula or product that was used 30 years ago. Just wondered if anyone had any first hand experience with this product back in the day.

I need an old school epoxy expert....

I bought a project (Osprey II) that was abandoned in the 1980's and has been sitting in a hanger since. The receipts show that Dow 330 epoxy was used extensively. It was bought from Wick's in the mid 80's and says " Dow epoxy kit 330/749". Anyone have any info on this stuff????

    Bowed Rib Template Base

I used 3/4" MDF for my rib template. Much more dimensionally stable but not without it's drawbacks (less durable).

What is the best way to clean a varnished wood airplane project?

I have aquired a wooden airplane project that has 30 years worth of dust on the inside of the wings, fuselage, cockpit, ect. What is the best product to clean it? Commercial cleaner (like Murphy Oil Soap)? Mineral Spirits?....... It was varnished with Stits varnish (not epoxy).

I bought an abandoned wood plane project that was varnished 30 years ago with stits uv550 varnish( before epoxy varnish was the standard). Can I use epoxy varnish over the old non-epoxy varnish for better protection?? Will it stick?

How is glued-on fabric removed from a wood structure??

Yeah Port Huron isn't really close to anywhere, lol. Yes I bought the plane from Niles. It was quite a sight transporting it on a modified landscaping trailer 2+ hours. The plane has short(standard) wings and the fuse tank. I thought for a second about doing the wing tanks but decided against it...

How is glued-on fabric removed from a wood structure??

I'll give you call when I'm in the area sometime. The wife is from Waterford so I am in the area a lot. Have you joined the Osprey II Yahoo groups? Ton's of good info on there, including the Osprey II Newletters from the 1980's. I recommend downloading them if you haven't already.

How is glued-on fabric removed from a wood structure??

I have not tried a heat gun, but it's worth a shot. I assume the glue is Poly-Tak, as it looks like Stits was used. The owner that started the project has passed away so all I can do is make educated guesses.

How is glued-on fabric removed from a wood structure??

Thanks Tblake. I am also restoring an Osprey II over here in the Lansing area. It's actually an uncompleted project from the 1980's, so some of it is being treated as an restoration because of the age. Did your Osprey ever fly??

How is glued-on fabric removed from a wood structure??

I have a 30 year old wood rudder that needs recovered. It was originally covered in stits and I need to restore it. ...Is there a trick for removing the glued-on fabric without damaging the wood??
