    Wood skell, bike removed,,,UAV?

LOL. And reading old Silver Surfer comic books.

    Wood skell, bike removed,,,UAV?

Rider stands behind the spar. Batteries in front. All my power lines are super short. Running with a dead mans switch and can fall out the back as a way to emergency egress. Getting there.

    Wood skell, bike removed,,,UAV?

Head on without the hoops. I have a nice profile going into my on coming doom. :) The Riders crouch will position 50% of their profile behind that so,,,feeling good about drag. Figuring out the best way to build the pilar to replace the coffee can. Have not ruled out using coffee can. Edit...

    Wood skell, bike removed,,,UAV?

Its balanced on a coffee can in the prev picts. Here is the planned under carriage beginning. It a bit low now. Rider will be like a crouched skier. Poles will be how you hold on ,,, will be fitted with thumb controls. Edit, standing on a skateboard holding on is, I feel a comfortable position...

    Wood skell, bike removed,,,UAV?

And a simplification pass. Still not sure how much support my hoops are going to need. An ealier design has them cantalievered to the fuse and that works, just so hard to prdict vibration. Going to clean it up, but will just use a full hoop span motor mount. I don't like the drag component...

    Wood skell, bike removed,,,UAV?

So, after a multitude of design considerations, I got to this. Big shrouded 21 inch props, a bit of a blended wing adjunct and lose the bike. Going to be able to test autonomously with short hops. Going to sandbag my payload. So gained on safety for testing. Will prob be able to go UAV as the...

The best wood primer I have seen.

Hey all you wood builders. I don't know if this is common knowledge but a super good read here pdf here: It answers all the basics on woods for aircraft. I read it years ago when deciding on using poplar for some of my structure. Stumbled on it again today while ruminating on brass nails...

Flying bike update, in case you were wondering

Ok. Thread drift. The most interesting part is the roof about the bay window. (1,2)All these angles were cut on site.(3) Here was a little bit of an oops with boards that were cut to length but put up in the wrong order. (4) And the last pict is what I pull out sometimes when scarf joint...

Flying bike update, in case you were wondering

Great question. When I moved back to Cambridge with my son, I started living in my studio Apt that I had bought 30 years ago when I was working as an audio engineer in otolarygology. I had been renting it out until it was paid for. Anyway, I found out that top floor owners also owned the attic...

Flying bike update, in case you were wondering

Sealed the design. Ordered the motors, props, ESCs hubs...wooden part is layed out with clips and shimms, all set to glue. I love wooden aircraft construction!

    Flying Bike Progress.

Here is a progress photo on the new version. Got the big prop shrouds. Going to hinge them for in flight trim, thanks for the suggestion HBA member. 21.5 inch CFRP props at 3kw burst, 2kw 60% throttle. Gonna be fun.

    My prop shroud,,,thoughts?

This is going to be a strictly Ground Effect Vehicle at the onset. Trying to exploit that regime to go as small as possble. Underpowered with a purpose. ;)

    My prop shroud,,,thoughts?

You have a very nice design. Will be great for powered take-offs and then an engine shutdow for soaring. Very little drag. Radial inlets look great!

    My prop shroud,,,thoughts?

Airboats tend to be metal. Hovercraft, FRP. Got a bit of a stomache bug today but I've got a decent feel for how to go forward with this after digesting all the comments. (No pun intended but I'll take what I can get:) Trimming a bit off the octgon peaks when I feel better and figured out a way...

    My prop shroud,,,thoughts?

3hp times 2. Cutting it close but thats the point here... I know real world application is different than data sheets but thats why I am dong this. Its ok if I'm wrong about my idea but I think I will be close.

    My prop shroud,,,thoughts?

It's for safety. Gotta think it through at some point. If the shroud becomes the limiting factor to flight I can rethink it but for now, better safe than sorry.

    My prop shroud,,,thoughts?

Those are some MacCready numbers. I will not be spinning the props by pedaling. I will be using a 48v system pumping about 20-30 Amps into each motor with a peak of 2500 watts.
  18. TheFlyingBikeGuy

    My prop shroud,,,thoughts?

You mean spin the shroud? I couldn't possibly ever balance that with my rig. I'm also going with 3rd party CFRP props already balanced. I can put a fat leading edge on the shroud to give me negative clearace as suggested above. But as it is now my clearance will be 3/4 inch. About 1/3 of the...

    My prop shroud,,,thoughts?

Couple more things. I thought of foam but my love for wood always wins. Also using a 21.5 inch prop and a 3kw electric motor. I am going to have 2 of these on my flying bike. Its gonna look something like this very rough mok up: Edit. They will be spaced out by 2 feet in final version. Also...
