"We just hit a Drone!" | Windshield Damaged on United B737 MAX at SFO

Yep! And of course those are just everywhere. Why I would pass 5 or 6 regular RC fields just to get to the nearest so call "recognized" field. And of course if you're not an AMA member AND member of that club, you still can't fly at that recognized field.

"We just hit a Drone!" | Windshield Damaged on United B737 MAX at SFO

Got that straight from the AMA did you? And do you fly from an FAA approved area or did you purchase some additional equipment? The AMA claims some 100,000 members give or take. Yet when the FAA drone registration first came about over one million signed up. So it can be surmised that only...

"We just hit a Drone!" | Windshield Damaged on United B737 MAX at SFO

You might want to re-check the rules. My understanding is the pilot and spotter must be co-located to allow communication between them without the aid of something like a cell phone, radio, string and tin cans, etc.

The current version of the Mavic is kept below 1600 by its flight controller programming. The drone is capable of going much higher and there are several ways this can be done.

I think the current attitude towards the rules is the fault of the AMA. Because they seem to think the rules don't always apply to them. Quality of management has gone way, way down during the past 20 plus years. The AMA has been hemorrhaging money for a number of years now and they're doing...

    Those Were the Days!

Same economic rules apply to everything regardless of purpose. But at the same time did the natives even want the equipment? Or is this another demonstration of American benevolence by forcing a population into the 20th century whether they want it or not? So who's going to train the natives...

"We just hit a Drone!" | Windshield Damaged on United B737 MAX at SFO

My last job before cancer forced me to retire, I worked as quality assurance for a small team of developers. We had a single product, an app which could and did track a persons cell phone. With it we could determine a persons pattern of life better known as their daily routine. Once you have...

"We just hit a Drone!" | Windshield Damaged on United B737 MAX at SFO

From what I have seen/experienced those in the RC hobby are aware of the rules and may or may not bother to respect them. While those not in the hobby pretty much ignore the rules if indeed they know about them. When I see a drone being used for commercial purposes I ask if the operator is...

"We just hit a Drone!" | Windshield Damaged on United B737 MAX at SFO

I agree with it probably being a bird but, drones today certainly have the capabilities for this scenario. 400 feet is the limit in the US too. Higher needs FAA permission. And the limit is lower, down to zero around airports. And for some reason there are a number of active flying sites...

i cannot lie i like big Guns

Except for maybe one off prototypes that never went into production and failed miserably, I don't believe anything of Naval gun caliber has been used. WWII you had a number of efforts in the 75mm range. And today there's the 105mm in the AC-130 gunships. But my favorite is still the 30mm in...

    Those Were the Days!

Most of the equipment left over was dumped simply because it was determined to be too expensive to bring it back and store/maintain it. How many more trips to the Pacific would the cargo ships have had to make to bring everything back? I once read where a P-51 cost 35k to make. Selling as...

The 10 Most Beautiful Military Jets Ever

Loran has some tremendous range for a ground based Nav system. Literally thousands of miles. Transmit frequency was 100 KHz and the signal would follow the nape of the earth as well as going straight out. There is an island north of where I was at in Germany and off the west coast of Denmark...

I recall seeing adds offering surplus P-51's for a mere $5,000. Tried to convince my Dad we needed one but in his words "We couldn't afford to put air in the tires."

Scale sandwich composite Honda jet build condensed to 14 minutes

Wish I had the where with all to do all the CAD, design, 3d printing etc. I retired from the IT world 11 years ago and this stuff is beyond me. However my expertise was network security and not using CAD stuff so that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Noticed too he went with electric ducted...

    Wing rib to spar adhesive/epoxy

I suspect one can get Silicone that cures to various hardness' while always retaining a bit of flex. I know your off the shelf 5 minute epoxy often has some flex to it when fully cured. Thus being able to control the rigidity of the joint. If silicone doesn't get hard enough for you then use...
