    Wood to steel

Take a look at that nice picture in post #7. That is a fairly typical strut braced wing assembly, it doesn't look much different from my non-braced cantilever wings. There are parts in that picture that are under tension, some under compression, some with some flex and some have side loads...

    Steel vs Aluminum Rivets

This is exactly what I meant when I said you are missing some detail about rivets. "Aluminum" is NOT the issue here, it's the specific design details of THIS specific rivet that causes it to state "non-structural". Many pulled rivets that use one of the many grades of aluminum as their BASE...

    Steel vs Aluminum Rivets

Comments like these suggest you do not fully understand aircraft "rivets". I know you said you did extensive research, I suggest getting some textbooks on riveting in particular. The simple concept that since steel is stronger than aluminum does not mean a steel rivet is better than an...

    Is homebuilding going to vanish?

The old cubs in particular have a good deal of mild steel in the fuselage. Turtledeck and some fittings come to mind. If the lower strength is acceptable for the load and it saved money, why not. And of course they were welded to the "regular" structure of 4130. It's funny to see people today...

    Is homebuilding going to vanish?

I don't agree. Local is not a requirement in the 21st century. We are a global economy/society (like it or not) and there are very few commodities we can't have delivered tomorrow at a sustainable cost. I can get MOST household plumbing fittings at the local big big home store, and the ones...

    Where Do You Build?

My ex used to ask (generally when at family gatherings) who I would choose, her or the airplane. I responded (many times) with "whichever one made me choose would loose". I explained that they are not mutually exclusive, and managed my time well. In fact, I raised a family, started and...

    Where Do You Build?

Really, is that a serious question? How about whoever has been on the list longest, or whoever responds to the advertisement with a deposit first. I want no part in deciding who "deserves" a simple product more. And if I heard that practice was going on I'd take my business elsewhere.

    Where Do You Build?

Interesting discussion. If you are interested in building an airplane I wonder how you ended up getting a house without some shop space? Don't you have tools accumulated over the years and an interest in tinkering? Most hombuilders do, but some don't; they wake up and it's time to get into it...

Qualifying a Experimental built from Parts ?

Agreed. My EAB (Spacewalker II) is being built with hardware from aircraft suppliers, aircraft grade material where applicable, and will use an engine that was probably certified at one time. Avionics, covering; most will be certified as well. JH
