Achieving The Best Reflexed Airfoils for Flying Wing use in the Small Plane Categories

Yes but as soon as you have an AOA that changes, the static margin has changed, all your moments and weights and angles of items are now OFF in relation to the ideal, the COG is moving around, fuel slosh etc etc. When your XCp varies greatly that also has an effect, so the pitch axis for your...

Achieving The Best Reflexed Airfoils for Flying Wing use in the Small Plane Categories

OK but what perhaps we are not understanding, or I am not, is what a -15% SM on say Option 1: The plank, actually looks like in terms of an airfoil that then has to both change speed and AOA and do those in combinations of Climb turn etc and what the stability margin does then? Does it get...

Achieving The Best Reflexed Airfoils for Flying Wing use in the Small Plane Categories

Ok seeing as your using Xfoil lets get it so our graph outputs are the same.... Your Mach is not set, this makes a difference and does more closely match CFD results. https://sourceforge.net/p/xflr5/discussion/679396/thread/ece0a016/ Also you can set the trip to be anywhere you want on both...

Achieving The Best Reflexed Airfoils for Flying Wing use in the Small Plane Categories

I assume he means he is trimming for level flight at that 0.3 CL with a -15% SM, which is at 1 degree AOA for his configuration, discounting the center section. So regardless of that, the trim still changes a lot with AOA and speed changes with that airfoil and the tip and the root have...

Thanks for that I have downloaded it. There are also various Airfoil DAT files for those interested, just underneath the English version of the book. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1lt2KWsBWQwZtNgNkYSlXz7_PoV5HHYKF

Look forgive my scepticism but in the example data you gave the chords, speeds and Reynolds numbers didn't even correlate, so perhaps you can show us your CMvTRIM plots at the -15% static margin that you intend to use, especially how that will vary with AOA!

Achieving The Best Reflexed Airfoils for Flying Wing use in the Small Plane Categories

I recommend you get the Marske book(The wing and I) create/aquire his airfoils, Positive CM, run the analysis and see how it works out........ Same with the Horten airfoils etc etc. Aiming for a single level flight cruise with poor AREA under the CL/CD AOA Polar will not be good for climb out...

Airfoil selection for an aircraft out there?

You are correct, its not possible to generalize about a series of airfoils, of any type and apply them without analysis at a speed and reynolds number reflective of what is being built. For instance the issue with a 23012 nose under curve is not present to the same extent on the 23015. Other...

Achieving The Best Reflexed Airfoils for Flying Wing use in the Small Plane Categories

A more practical reflexed version is included here, only a small loss in performance for a large change in CM positioning. As usual a tradeoff but better than trimming Aileron's or Elevon's up to get trim with its associated drag penalty.

Achieving The Best Reflexed Airfoils for Flying Wing use in the Small Plane Categories

Further to this as the original airfoil was not reflexed I took its thickness distribution and applied it to a reflexed camber line to get the CM curve closer to zero. That increased the camber so did not loose all the CL that reflexing normally would, however that distribution reflexed whilst...

    Formula-I?

Yes, this MC30 seems to be useful for cruise flights as well, not longer range speedy ones that's all, a task Industrial powered devices are not suited to.

There are all sorts of existing designs that are possibilities or inspirations for mods or new designs. Many plans and lots of information in here.. https://www.ultraligero.net/ingles/index_i.htm An example.. There are a few in NZ. They look a little more sporty than a Hummelbird, in my...

Yes weight will be a big factor, but assumably there is to be a minimum weight folks cannot go below! Also how much lift ones fuselage contributes in the turn will make a difference, some may make none at all.....
