What did you do on your airplane project today?

Today, the ButcherBird 58% bottom mold got a coat of Gray Duratec. This will be wet sanded smooth in preparation for creating the bottom carbon fiber part. The top molds are already prepped. I am redesigning the wing attach & landing gear trunnion for better geometry and serviceability...

Airfoil selection for an aircraft out there?

Just the center section to the stub, 96”for the center sect. We have to make the outer wi h section. I’m not an aero engineer so I’m just musing. The top of the wing in the middle section is formed for the 23015. Maybe we can adjust the top. I’ll have to get that info from a...

Airfoil selection for an aircraft out there?

We are cleaning up the molds in preparation of the first airworthy fuselage. The mold has the 23015 wing stubs and if we were to keep it then the wing would be stronger, bonded to the skins, and it would greatly ease the timeline and complexity. The outer wing panels are another matter...

Airfoil selection for an aircraft out there?

I see there is a NACA 23015.9. It looks nearly the same as 23015. Why the .9?

Airfoil selection for an aircraft out there?

I guess I don’t know what Va and Vg is other than maneuvering speed and a dive speed.

Airfoil selection for an aircraft out there?

I will forward your insights to the aero guy we are using. With better airfoil and same across the wing I may not need as much twist.

Airfoil selection for an aircraft out there?

Because of the thickness of the foil moved aftward? I’m not sure it will be that obvious. The easy button for me is to just keep the 23015 but I may as well try for better performance. I really want better stall and more efficient speed. The GA 37A315 seems to give me both.

Airfoil selection for an aircraft out there?

The WAR with a 23015 root and 23012 tip flew well. Stall abrupt. I was going to look into either 315 to the tip or maybe 312. Just looking for better stall. We will have an aero engineer who will analyze it and see what he thinks.

ULPower 350iS. I’d have to upscale to 65% for the Verner 7S

Flyable fuselage. IOW….this one will be able to be completed as the prototype.

The project is funded and a timeline for KOSH is penciled in. We will build a flying fuselage, bulkheads, longerons, firewall, spars, instrument panel, and landing gear system. We have a head start on most of this. Molds are made. The spar will have to be sized for the new airfoil so we will...

Airfoil selection for an aircraft out there?

Based on some of your insight, we are going to look at the GA 37A315 airfoil for the FW190. We will be changing from a 23015. Goal is better cruise speed and better stall. Not sure if we will keep the same foil to the tip. Prob will use washout 2degrees. Plan now is to build the flying...

Airfoil selection for an aircraft out there?

Reading thru this thread there is a ton of good info. The consensus of some engineer friends as well as this thread indicates the GA 37A should improve performance. The project is funded and a timeline for KOSH is penciled in. We will build a flying fuselage, bulkheads, longerons...

The molds will not be carbon fiber. Just the parts.

We are cleaning up the fuselage molds. They were not perfect.
