During the aircraft sizing process, when using wing loading, should I include or ignore the area of the wing that is covered by the fuselage?

For various aircraft from the manufacturer's website, there is disagreement on the standard method of measuring wing area in that some sites use effective wing area (exposed wing area) while others use planform wing area (total planform area including that covered by the fuselage).

For the tail volume equations, should I be using the planform or effective wing areas?
