I know we have engineers in this group and literal rocket scientists, but what about lawyers? There’s something I’m curious about: if I were to have an antique airplane, or replica, or period correct home built, what happens if I put some still-existing company’s period logo on it? If I had a DC-3 would American Airlines be mad if I painted it to represent one of theirs, or would I upset Champion spark plugs with a Turner Meteor replica?
As one data point, the Piet I care for (well, at the moment I just store it but I feel bad enough about that) was originally finished in a fictitious Texaco scheme… until it wasn’t. I’ve always had a suspicion that the owner received a carefully yet purposefully worded letter from Texaco’s legal department on that as I’ve seen pictures of it de-lettered and it was sold and totally redone not long after. I ask all this because my attainable (barely) dream plane build is a replica of one originally owned by Shell and decorated accordingly. Should I just put that notion to bed or what?
