I know spars are typically quarter sawn rather than flat sawn. Is this because the wood is stronger in one direction than the other? ANC-19 seems to indicate that strength is the same either way but quarter sawn is desireable for dimentional stability. Put another way, if you have a 1 x 1 x 36 inch straight grained piece of wood, will it have the same bending strength regardless of the orientation?
