I found the thread on “Design a new version of the Fournier Motor Glider.” To be very interesting. It got me thinking about the classic SGS 1-26 market of the 50’s. What would HBA minds do with a mythical 21st century FAR 103 motor glider to mimic the 1-26 performance and popularity.
Don’t worry about construction or engine selection. Assume you can cut the airframe weight in half and add a small motor to meet a 250 pound empty weight and carry a 200 pound pilot.
If the span and wing area are the same , 40 foot and 160 sq ft (AR 10:1) it would surly make the stall speed limit. Reducing the span to 32 feet would keep the span loading constant. Play with the AR at your leisure.
What power (climb rate) would be desired as a minimum?
What other performance and parameters would you like?
What maximum price / build time must be met?
Could such an aircraft be popular in todays market?
Would flying sights and flight training, or lack of FS/FT, kill the deal?
