I am exploring the possibility of mounting my Rotec R2800 on a stock Fly Baby fuselage. This flies in the face of the accepted wisdom in the Fly Baby community that the Rotec is too heavy, too nose-heavy (due to the planetary gear in front), too unreliable (colored by the French U-tube videos we’ve all seen), and even, according to Harry Fenton, Continental engine guru, too pretty!
But…when I run the numbers on CG, I conclude the R2800 should work on a stock Fly Baby, even for a pilot as light as myself (140).
Positioning the battery behind the pilot seat adds some additional margin.
For a heavier pilot, CG is less of an issue but one would want to register the ship with max gross at least 1050 and probably 1100 (both of which have been used by some Fly Baby builders in the past).
My current thinking, but more research to be done.
