I am studying Peery’s Aircraft Structures and am stuck on pages 4 and 5. It’s not the math I have a problem with(although I’ve been out of high school for quite some time now), but rather, I am not understanding why the length of these legs (4” and 2.4”, circled in red) were calculated and then used to find the forces of these segments. And why, at the top of page 5, is the value 5(circled) used?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

PS- Is it just me or are there some mathematical errors in the work on these pages?
