1909 Grade Monoplane

First flown by Hans Grade on August 17, 1909, powered by an 18 hp two-stroke air-cooled V-4 driving a six foot prop, and controlled by wing warping, this monoplane was the first heavier-than-air aircraft produced in Germany. 80 were built including the first airplane flown in Japan. Later that year he won the Lanz prize for piloting the first German-built airplane to fly a 2.5 km figure 8, establishing a factory and flying school at Bork, near Magdeburg, with the prize money. In January of 1910 he won another prize for flying 20 km in 22:57.
Span is 10.2 m (33 ft 6 in), Area 25 m2 (270 sq ft), Gross 200 kg (441 lb), and Light 125 kg (276 lb), Max level 60 km/h (37 mph, 32 knots).
