At the risk of reigniting discussion on how to cram too much airplane into a big tin box, here’s the pre-1910 version of a plane that would almost certainly fit in a 40’ can:

Instead of folding the wings it folds the fuselage stuff that holds the front and back bits. Get a look at the way those front frame and even the skids just hinge out to the sides.
