So everyone is talking about creating a new racing league that doesnt require multi million dollar warbirds.... so lets set a reasonable engine goal, far below any Rolls Royce, but high enough to be a challenge for auto engines. 1000hp is becoming more and more common in custom engines, so lets use that as a goal.
For some years now, even the 6.5 liter GM diesel has been capable of putting out 1000 hp on a dyno. It weighs a substantial 700lbs... but that still gives it a stunning power to weight ratio, and it can still cruise at 180hp or more. The engines can be made to produce 1000hp for less than many stock aircraft engines, so its something that would be more than possible for many aircraft owners.
That said... a 1000hp aircraft combined with the Laminar fuselages that Auto is always talking about... and you can easily break 400mph. Speed may not be limited by affordability. If we only need 10-20 hours a season... its likely that we could use far cheaper engines that we already know can produce 700-1000hp on the track.
Any thoughts or suggestions? Other common engines that can sustain 1000hp for any reasonable amount of time?
