If you take a flat sheet 3 layers thick of cured carbon fiber or fiberglass, Its weaker if you push in the middle of the sheet but its stronger if you push or pull from the ends.

Now if you took one sheet of uncured and place small dividers of foam in a pattern like thisUntitled1.jpg
and put a second layer over it and mashed that layer into triangles around the spacers like this Untitled2.jpg
you would probably end up with a pattern like Untitled3.jpg because of spacers, yellow shows secondary bends caused from being mashed down around the spacers.
Now put a flat 3rd layer over that and let it cure. I wounder if it would have any more or less structural rigidity compared to 3 flat layers together.
