I know this is heresy to some, but does anyone have any personal experience flying behind a VW with a plain old single coil-and-distributor ignition?
A couple of years ago I asked Steve Bennett of Great Plains Aircraft Supply what he would suggest for a simple, lightweight, inexpensive VW installation for a Clutton FRED (see Clutton FRED | Steve Bennett on FRED VW power). To my surprise he suggested a distributor, a battery and a wind generator to keep it charged.
Whether with a wind generator or just an alternator, I'd love to hear some actual, first-hand experience of the pros and cons, reliablity or unreliability, of flying behind a single distributor igntion.
Cheers,
Matthew
