Yaesu FTA-230 handheld and use of cigarette lighter charger?

Can one use Yaesu's CD-59 cigarette lighter charger as a power source while the FTA-230 radio is being used in an airplane? If so, it seems doing so would keep the radio operating at full strength rather than on declining battery power.
