My little City, Deyang, does the press forgings for them on the Worlds largest press at Erzhong that RR had to wait until finished late last year before they could finish these engines. For those who know presses it takes 36 intensifiers each the size of a car to feed it.

I have stood in front of this press and believe me the picture does not do it justice!

    Forging facility

Another English mate of mine does some of the RR inconel fuel fittings 1/2 an hour away.

Fuel efficient and jet engine should never be combined in the same sentence. :)

Yeh, I should have written the headline in the paper. :p

i can't get me head around '90 tonnes of force on each fan blade'... That's 883,000N !!! How big are these blades? And what the hell are they made of?

Actually, some of those larger engines have SFCs better than piston engines. Size means everything to a turbine engine.

Actually, Size is the current path because the internals can't handle the heat loads that would permit smaller engines to achieve "better" SFCs.

Too much turbulence/forces for ceramic components is what I understand. This fact has been known/understood for a long time.

You should, it embodies the homebuilding spirit! Three boys build a spaceship out of an old tilt-a-whirl car and an Apple IIe.
