SR-71 is always tempting, but it's not really a short field airplane.
It's limited to just a handful of runways. My compromise:

A merlin chewing through 30gph @ idle sounds bad enough to feed, actually the a10 is in that range too isn't it?

they tested an IAR 80 with a DB 601 and it blew the normal IAR out of the park. It was almost as fast as the 109E yet still retained the manouverability of the IAR. For some reason, it was not proceeded with.

The DB version suffered structural issues IRC.

It ( IAR-80 ) remotely looks like the Hughes Racer.
