I finished the forms that will be used to make the wing ribs. I tried making a nose rib and was amazed when it came out looking like it was supposed to. Then my heater quit. Next step, get my propane tanks refilled.:)

Re: January 2011 - Tell us what you've done this month!

I'm bummed to report that my project has remained dormant since returning from Afghanistan. I want to wait to start the wings until I get to my duty station. I do visit the completed parts up in the attic about once a week though.... :)

I became a founding member of the new local EAA Chapter here in Savannah. Great group of folks.

My main focus this month has been on HBA though. I've been researching a better search engine for the site and planning for an articles section that is soon to come. There is still a lot to do to get either one of those improvements up and running but I'm making progress. I was also able to get a donation system working and take care of all the legal red tape associated with it. Thanks to everyone for being understanding about the reasons and not busting my chops too bad about it. It has been a big stress relief. I've also been working on welcoming some new moderators and working them in as part of the HBA team. Most of you will be very familiar with the new moderators but an announcement thread to introduce them will be coming soon.

I guess that about sums it up....

January saw our group (six of us buddies are plans building six Zenith CH750s) take delivery of finishing kits, control kits, and a most of the remaining 4130 steel parts. The kits are good value and the parts are very high quality. This will speed our construction up considerably. This month we also started and completed the firewall assemblies, and built the lower forward fuselage sides. We currently have 1200 hours into them and next month will be our two year anniversary. Been awhile since I posted anything, but I bought the Corvair conversion manual and some stuff to build my cnc hotwire cutter. As always I doodle around and scheme about my design even if nothing really comes of it.

btw anyone know where a good corvair engine core can be found for a reasonable price? I want to report soon that I actually have the engine for my plane.

Hey Joe, are you all building together in the same facility? Any pictures?

Fortunately, and yet unfortunately, the only thing anywhere near aviation was meeting an ex RAF friend whom I hadn't seen for 46 years. Talk about 2 peas in a pod. We carried on as though there had only been a 46 day separation. Strange how you can sometimes find a friend who is soooo like yourself in personality. We had a ball, albeit only for 4 days as he's on a world tour and his home is in the UK.109a.jpg I'm on the left.

Well, it's been another month of total focus upon my business. The end of the year is traditionally a slow time for my industry, and this year was no exception. And this month I've been focused upon landing a potentially large new account.

I suppose that will help pay for future aviation work, but nothing direct yet on that front.

Spent nearly the entire month trouble shooting engine test stand wiring. Damaged my ECU, got it repaired, improved some electrical grounding, got most of a throttle linkage done. Today I'll be checking the crank angle sensor wiring for possible problems, and probably pulling my hair out some more.

Re: January 2011 - Tell us what you've done this month!

Friday the 28th the weather was not freezing, not real wet and not windy and I had a free afternoon.

I hadn't even seen my hangar for a couple of months so I went. Saw my buddy Wally putting away his Clip wing Cub. He flys for a living and had an 8 day trip starting that night and was out to enjoy the nice weather too. I pulled my Cessna 150 out of the way (got to finish that anual!) and got my Pitts out and committed some aviation. Just flew around and did some rolls, loop and hammerhead. And of course with no one watching, made one of my better landings! Good to be flying again.

I didn't do anything with airplane parts this month but I did send an article about flaps for tailless swept wings to some editors. It'll be published in the T.W.I.T.T. newsletter and RCSD. Sometimes I worry that I'll end up with a nickname like Bruce Carmichael (all charts and no parts Carmichael) but then I remember that I'm not nearly as smart as Bruce and last time I saw he had a nearly completed flying wing in his shop

Hi Jake,

Yeah, we are all in a heated 20' x 22' garage with too much junk and just enough tools. When we finish something, we have to store the pieces off site. Lots of pictures. Here is my build log site: ExperCraft Simple Log: Fliar 2's CH750

Cheers,

Re: January 2011 - Tell us what you've done this month!

No real parts made this month.

Been cold here (-17F) right now, even though the Crocus are starting to poke up near the house. Typical spring time in the Rockies.

I did manage to figure out the problem I was having with Cosmos that kept me from meeting my self-imposed deadline of the year end to get my CAD work finished for my current project. I was using the project to teach myself Solidworks. A better teacher would have helped. :ermm:

The CAD is 98% finished, but it will be at least 6 weeks before I can get to the CNC stage. Just couldn't pass up a deal on a larger house with an unfinished basement that needs a bit of work. It will be nice to have a work area at home, even if it is just one bench. :ban:
