It seems to me that the many onerous regulations placed on the private aircraft industry has had the effect of driving much of it to kit and home builders effectively removing the government from the process altogether. One must ask if we would be better off allowing domestic companies to manufacture aircraft without regulations, then pushing people towards home building, or just opting out of aviation as a great many people do. Why not start off with light sport aircraft and see how it goes?
Now I am not against home building. Quite the opposite. But with an aging fleet and aging group of private pilots, our ability to influence policy and manufactures will continue to wane unless we can grow the base by getting people into the air. That will not happen until training and purchasing/operating costs are brought down out of the stratosphere. It's also time to let instructors teach in their own experimental aircraft but that is another post.
