I've been in the practice of 'installing' my taper pins in the fuselage when the wings are removed. That way they are always there.
I have big hands and found the rear spar taper pin nuts and step washers very hard to install/remove. So I turned and milled special nuts from aircraft bronze. They make the nut and step washer one piece. They are also drilled for lockwire and accept a 7/16 X 12 point socket. The socket will still fit with the lockwire started on the nut. Since the taper pins are essentially a fastener in shear, high strength or locking nuts are not required.
