Sun n Fun 2017 is scheduled for April 4 through 9, at Lakeland Linder Airport, in Lakeland, Florida. It is smaller than the EAA convention in Oshkosh, but it is the second biggest gathering of sport flyers in the USA. It seems to have more ultralights, although I do not have statistics on that. If you can attend only one, make it Oshkosh, but if you are able to get to Lakeland, you should enjoy it.

Typically, the weather is similar to what we had at Oshkosh on Monday and Tuesday this year.

I have two gathering places in mind for HBAers - the OX5 / Pioneers club house, for AM coffee, and Magaritaville after the airshow for your favorite beverage.

I realize that this is early, but I've been hanging around here long enough to know that those of you who are paying into Social Security (thank you - hope that there is someone to pay you when the time comes) will need plenty of time to schedule vacation and convince the family to go to Disney World without you, and the other retirees will need awhile to mull it over.

Check your calendar, and start considering it.

    Info here: SUN ’n FUN Int’l Fly-In & Expo - SUN 'n FUN

About how much smaller is it? Always wondered about that.

Nah, It's never too early. I measure time in terms of Oshkosh, Reno, repeat. Christmas is somewhere in there too but I forget when. Would like to add Sun-n-Fun and Chino to the annual lineup as time & money allow.

Just a SWAG: Overall, about 1/5th the size, but all the parts, equipment and electronics vendors will be there. About equal talent in the airshow. The Sun n Fun airshow is not as long (good thing, IMO) but the have had excellent night shows for many years, something relatively new to Oshkosh. Sun n Fun also has had the Blue Angles and Thunderbirds fairly often (bad thing IMO, but others seem to like it). The attendance of EABs has been down recently. That is the biggest negative. Sun n Fun seems to have more ultralights. Not much in the way of forums. I really enjoy visiting with people that I see there once a year. No splash-in last year due to high lake level at Kermit's lake.

EAA released attendance numbers for 2016 Airventure. Good trend.

    Showplanes up 7%
    Homebuilts up 11%
    Vintage up 7%
    Military up 6%

I would not be here today if I had not gone to Fun n Sun in the early '90s. So there's that.

I went to the first one. 74 wasn't it BJC? just something of a glorified cow pasture feel to it. Nice. none of the over whelming commercial crap like now. Guys were hanging around the planes and flying one another's. First/only time I flew a Flybaby. Traded JB's Bakeng Duce for the Flybaby for a while. Lotsa the old original plans built tube and rag planes that this movement was built off of. Glass hadn't been invented yet; most guys didn't have a skid ball. Sigh...

    It was in January, 1975.

I probably saw you there. Over the years, I have met 5 or 6 people who were there, but I didn't know at the time. I was pretty shy back then. Some wish that I still were....

If it's 1/5 the size of OSH, the other 4/5 at OSH is tractors, cars, jet trucks, magic folding ladders, and steak knives. I haven't been able to do SNF properly in several years, but they do have forum buildings that *aren't* on the flightline (you can actually hear the presenter), and a dedicated alternative engine tent for those of us who like to keep the E in EAA. OSH (at least the last time I went, a decade ago) treats the alt engine guys and even the homebuilt guys, to some extent, like red headed stepchildren.

SNF has its faults, but you probably won't be bored, unless you're boring. :)

Last year at Sun-N-Fun I worked my butt off as a volunteer. I had a great time teaching gas welding and working in the alternative engine workshop. The volunteer staff are a great group, we all had a blast. I'm bringing more tequila this year for margaritas. Man did we go through the tequila! I'm starting a new job soon. I hope they approve my time off for Sun-N-Fun! If not I'll probably quit my new job. Sun-N-Fun is a totally different vibe than Oshkosh. I'm going to try to volunteer every year from now on. Can't wait!

So, I will be coming down. My friend, our two 9 year old boys, and his father. Borrowing a 34ft rv this time around!
We will come down on Wednesday morning from the Atlanta area and stay till early Saturday morning.
    Things I want to see:
    Steve Wolf's Samson Mite
    Belite two place
    Wednesday night air show
    Friday Blue Angels
    LSA/ultralights
    rotary (Wankel) powered stuff
    Any interesting engine combos

I'm sure we will be relegated to the back of the campground but that's fine. Bringing bikes for the hike. Plan on grilling about every meal.

I may put out a welcome HBA'ers sign- stop by for a handshake and a beer if you see it.

    Hey Bill,

I don't know if I'll make it to SNF, but we're looking at doing a rotary/alt engine gathering in late May, here at my home airport, Slobovia Outernational (MS71) near Jackson MS. If weather is good, we'll probably have 4 or 5 flying rotaries plus numerous builders. If you're interested, PM me or send me an email at mcsophie@gmail.com, & I'll keep you updated. Are you a member on the Flyrotary email list?

And maybe I Rockydog2 will bring his 'alt engine' Legal Eagle down from Grenada. (hint hint) :)
