The easiest way to get a very nice radio is buy a Flightline FL-760A from Wings and Wheels. It fits in a 2 and 1/4 instrument hole and works good.
I have one in my Pitts. It is a little over $650.

Hmmm..think I am wrong. I have a radio, will have to pull it out of storage, which was an aircraft radio "kit." Crystal controlled, but a kit. Think it was popular with the sailplane crowd as it was cheap and light. I will pull it out and post the manufacturer.
