Although strictly speaking this is not related with aviation, it is a good example of what can be achieved by using some aerodynamic advantage and tundra type tyres.
Maria was competing with two other men riding conventional MTB (wit tundra tyres).
World's first cycle to the South Pole achieved
Notice that she didn´t use any kind of shield to protect her from blizzards!
It is amazing to realize that in those modern days still human or animal power transport might be more versatile in some complicated terrains (urban or natural) with adverse weather. Maria Leijerstam was cycling in conditions and terrains where an airplane or any other kind of vehicle couldn´t possible operate.

A few years back, I red a funny article telling that the german army recently bought in spain four mules to drag artillery pieces in mountain areas, they were carefully selected between 12 different herds. The mules were considered to be the best possible (efficient, reliable...) choice for this specific purpose.
Let´s hope that maybe one day we will use simple and reliable hybrid human powered/electric (or other) flying vehicles, in line with the later designs of Paul Mc Cready, for daily life.
