looking for a volkswagen engine

im building a double legal eagle when i get back from afghanistan. looking for a volkswagen engine. im pretty green on this so any help would be greatly appreciated. i know i need the 1600cc engine. i would like to build it my self i know there are 4 major companies that build and sell them im looking to do everything my self. looking to find some general information on these engines and also looking for where i can get my hands on one. i know junk yards ebay places like that but im still learning what the best years are to look for. other little thigns to look for thank you for the help.
