A lot of common designs in wood use rectilinear bulkheads with longerons at the corners, like a VP1. Would it make any strength difference if the bulkhead were oriented as a diamond instead of a square, with the longerons on edge as well? I attached a crude drawing to give a better idea what I'm asking. Also, does the orientation of the grain in the bulkhead change the strength of the bulkhead much? Horizontal grain vs vertical? How would these squarish bulkheads compare with a more oval shape? The longerons and stringers would all have a different orientation as you work around the ellipse. Thanks!
