Lift Strut Notching?

Looking at my LMA Super Cub manual, I see these two lift struts coming together at the bottom of the fuselage attach points.

It looks to me like the larger streamlined tube (aluminum) is notched to receive the smaller one. There's nothing that describes this in the manual other than what you see above. I presume that the streamlined strut material is beefy enough to accept this kind of cutout treatment? Or should I be devising a way to get them to come together without notching?

I know on my Maule, the steel struts are trimmed and welded up, and have a threaded doo-hickey on the bottom for adjustment of washout and such. But this doesn't look that sophisticated.
