Whenever I have to cut or drill some long pice of material I always found it a problem to keep it level and supported, especially if you are cutting or drilling at one end. I was always hunting about the workshop to find bits of wood to shim the **** thing up.

One day I hit on an idea of using a scissor jack; it has worked very well indeed. The jack is almost infinitely adjustable and you can pick them up very cheaply (less than U$ 10.00 here in South Africa) brand new.

You can bolt or weld it to a simple stand to use as a support anywhere in the workshop and later I will add some bearings so that you can roll the material along this support.

Added to which you can use it to jack things up!
