I know, I know, not much of a home builder thing, but I just gotta know.

I know about the "every force has an equal and opposite reaction" but the question is, does the exhaust speed from a jet engine have to be faster than the plane is traveling?

In other words, if a jet plane is traveling at say 800 MPH, does the jet exhaust have to be faster than that?

Can a jet plane travel faster, in lever flight, faster than the speed of the exhaust out of the engine?
