I know this is an old thread but ....

The threaded started off with mention of Irv Culver's Screaming Weiner (later renamed Lil Dogie). There was also Culver's Rigid Midget. There are however quite a few other small sailplanes with spans in the 30 ft range.

One of those is the late Keith Jarvis's J-1 Joey and later J-2 Jumbuck.

Of note is that these sailplanes (span 32 ft) are built of wood and fabric and weigh just 140 lb (Keith was fairly small). L/D was approx 23 (same as a 1-26). The J-1 was designed in the 1950's. This was later fitted with a lawn mower engine for self launching.

Anyway below is a link to a video that shows these gliders in action (along with his other aircraft he built such as the Mitchell B-10). Note the launch of the Joey where several people lift the glider with Keith in it and throw it off the ridge into the wind.

You will also see in the video another of Keith's designs called the Australite which was an ultralight motorglider that looked a bit like a Fournier RF-3 (3 min mark in the video). Weight 210 lb, span 30 ft, wing area 107 sq ft and power was 18 hp.

Here is a link to the video:
