Has anyone installed some good lens IR camera for those days when unexpectedly coming back home into clouded and foggy terrain so landing would be easier? You know, the sky goes pitch black and the fog doesn't help either. You still got some 45 minutes of fuel but the visibility doesn't get any better. And then you switch on the camera you bought for a couple of hundred buck and appreciate every cent that you paid for a good lens. Suddenly you see where you got to fly and which way to turn.
Some years back those such cameras would be quite expensive but with the expanding markets and new technology there are security cameras which can see through both fog and darkness using the short waves (SWIR). They are not as expensive as some certified aerospace systems but they might be great for your vision in the cockpit to help you in finding the right way.
I'm not talking about the flimsy cheap stuff you could buy on DX or Ebay but a detailed resolution, fast frame rate and good lens camera. I've seen there are some with reasonable prices for a couple of hundreds that could show&film where your nose is pointing. Something like this:
See Through Fog Reduction Fog Penetration Cameras Haze Mist Rain Snow Smog Dust Sand Dark Sunglasses Tinted Car Windows
Lynceus™ WSN-2000X HD Wireless IP Camera Dedicated To IR X-Ray Vision
There's been so many pilots who have lost their way due to some trivial weather change so why not use this new technology to install it in a homebuilt? Do you have any experience you would like to share, what would you recommend, any ideas or tips what you have on your nose pointing you down in the right direction besides your sharp vision?
