I absolutely love that you're using a large scale Super Cub for your research rather than some generic box. Was there any reason to go scale other than the joy of it?

Think about a RV-3 with a Lyc-360, RC take off and landing. After take-off, use RC to turn on an off the shelf autopilot coupled to the GPS. GPS flying the trip that is programed, throw a SPOT in the RV for watching the flight on a laptop in real time. When you see the RV-3 approaching on the laptop, look in that direction and after locating the RV, turn the Autopilot off with the RC and land. Without the weight of a pilot the cockpit could be one large fuel tank for long range with the 10 GPH fuel burn of the Lyc-360 at cruise. Easy 500+ miles out and back or more. Just dreaming.

Thats pretty much how Maynard Hill flew his RC plane across the ocean. Hand launched and climbed to desired altitude; hit the autopilot. Dave Brown was in Ireland with an identical transmitter, turned off the autopilot and landed it. I think it took 5 tries. A friend was ferrying an aircraft to Europe. Many stop in Reykjavík Iceland for fuel for non stop planes. One of the earlier attempts was in a little museum on the field. Some fishermen picked it out of the water. Maynard Hill told them to keep it. Not bad for a .61 powered eleven pound plane at takeoff.

It just worked out that this model met the requirements. The fact that it happens to be a Cub is a bonus. :)

I used to fly against Dave Brown flying in the contest. Could never beat him. I have flown long flights from a Pickup truck on the interstate. Would fly the model about 100' on the right side about about 100" up. Down side is cars would pile up behind us watching the model.

I remember when it was popular to do those cross country flights but never was apart of one, although i did, at one time, have a transmitter that was used to fly a segment of the Sr Falcon across the country. I have seen Dave Brown fly; he was hard to beat in the day.

Red, that's an itty bitty little Wanderer you got there.

If you or any of the local modelers have any interest, I happen to be selling something unique and wierd enough to get a guy like you interested... a 6 or 7 foot long Boeing 707/KC-135 fiberglass fuselage. This was made at the Nick Ziroli shop back east, and there was never any kit offered for it. The mold was made for a display model to hang in a major air port, but because Ziroli was a real modeler he did it with proper R/C grade epoxy and glass cloth instead of "display model" materials. With the new small turbines and EDF units, this would be a completely show-stopping model. PM me if interested, or it is listed with photos in the classifieds section of RCGroups.com under jets.

If you act now, I will also throw in a 40+ year old EK Logictrol transmitter... :)

Logictrol II, 5 or 7 channel? Got a 7 channel with two receivers and a huge bunch of PS-2 servos.

Back in the day, the RC helicopter guys used the Hobby Lobby version of the Logitrol because all the electronics were in the receiver. The servos were just motors and gears and pot.

I'll go look. It's in a friend's hangar he's cleaning out and he gave me permission to sell whatever R/C stuff he wasn't going to use.

I have one or two of the Hobby Lobby versions too, with bank vault size servos that weigh half a pound each!

Price and several photos are all on the RC Groups classifieds section, under jets and electric jets. Search for "Boeing 701".

It might be considered spam or inappropriate for me to be actively selling something not relevant to HBA...
