According to data online, the Honda insight engine has a wide band of very good specific fuel consumption. Apparently quite a bit better than the old G10 engine (it has been about 30 years or so since the G10 was introduced, so not unexpected).
The other thing is that they are current and available. I imagine most of us would ditch the inline mounted electric motor, if it was not already removed by the scrapper, since it must be a relatively expensive part... The engines seem to be selling on ebay for $700-$1400, so not outlandishly expensive. Some of the examples had less than 5000 miles...
