It beggars belief... They successfully flew the plane a hundred years ago knowing almost nothing - and now a century later with all our accumulated aeronautical insights and expertise - we fail. It just underscores how precarious a path aviation has trodden to get where we are today...

Impossible to even guess what happened with such limited information, but a pilot who trained on similar aircraft might have a better chance than a modern trained pilot who, in a moment of stress, might instinctively expect the replica to behave like a modern aircraft.

Yep. Couple that with the fact that early aircraft had absolutely horrific flying qualities compared to modern aircraft, and it's actually not surprising that a modern pilot might get into trouble. These aren't just 'big ultralights' even if that IS what they look like. They're a full-sized airplane with flying characteristics - particularly stall-spin - that make modern airplanes look like the docile, easy-to-fly machines they really are.

Sad to hear about the pilot passing. Very sad.
