I've been on the fence for the last 10 years or more, trying to decide whether to build an aircraft or not. Way back when I first started procrastinating, I really liked the Barracuda. During that time I've looked at other designs, looked at really simple tube and fabric designs, but I really wanted something fairly quick with good range and preferably wood. I just love working with wood.
Anyway, I find myself now with enough disposable income to consider wasting it on an aircraft build and found out the plans were no longer available! Fortunately I tracked down an unused set with builders manual and they're speeding their way to me.
So I'll spend the next few months studying plans, working out a plan of attack with regards what to build first, so I can store the parts away etc and hope to start construction mid or later this year.
I'm building for a few reasons: I've been looking for that "big" project for a while now, I want an aircraft but can't bring myself to spend $40k on a Cesspit that needs stacks of work, looks like an oilcan used for shooting practice and does 120kts down a mineshaft. tooling costs for building in wood are also very low, I don't need anything much more specialised than what I have in the garage now. Plus I just love building things and learning in the process.
The Barracuda looks like a really nice, solid and fairly simple to build design and it hits all the performance numbers I want.
I have a PPL with CSU/retract endorsements and all I'm really interested in is day VFR and going there fast. I may add a night VFR rating some day but IFR doesn't do it for me, I enjoy the scenery too much.
I have no illusions as to this being a quick build...five years is the minimum I expect it to take, which is fine by me and my finances. You have to make a start sometime!
So that's about it from me, hello!
