Looking at various wood airplane plans I have, I began wondering about the size of gussets necessary where two or more "sticks" intersect. Is there some guideline like 150% of the size of the parts being joined? Example; If joining two 1/2" X 1/2" pieces in a 90 degree "T" joint, should the gusset extend/overlap 150% of the member size.....3/4" in the case of a 1/2" member, or is there some other accepted gusset sizing guide? Considering many joints can be exposed to both tension and compression loads, depending on what's happening at the time, would that play into gusset sizing? For sake of discussion let's base it on a joint being gusseted on both sides of a joint; IE: wing rib construction.
Thanks, in advance.
