    They had a lucky break that they hit that fence and it absorbed some kinetic energy.

    I doubt that honestly absorbed that much energy. The shocks of the vehicle probably did more in that regard. What was the lucky break was that they didn't land on any kids in the schoolyard (ala the 1950s Pacoima mid-air). That would have been a litigation nightmare and we could have said goodbye to the company.
