If you believe in preparing for disasters: fires, riots and mud-slides, what type of airplane would you chose?
Stock Cessna?
Souped-up STOL Super Cub?
Floatplane?
Motorglider?
Helicopter?
Lancair? ..... for high altitude, long range cruise .....

Since it is impossible to predict when or where the next disaster will strike, we need to discuss a variety of options.

Consider how many small plane pilots live in big cities and how quickly they could get to their airplane. For this scenario, we will start with riots, looting, muggings, etc. fending our home town uninhabitable. Maybe the zombie apocalypse spread beyond Hastings and Main. The disadvantage of fleeing Vancouver is that only a handful of roads lead to Whistler, Seattle, highway 1, etc. and they will
bevpacked solid with panicked refugees. Gas stations will soon get pumped dry.
The few ferry boats to Seattle, Gulf Islands or Secheldt will quickly over-load and a few desperate refugees will burn up all their gasoline waiting in ferry line-ups.

Personal boats provide a quick exit from downtown, but can they carry enough gasoline - or wind - to reach a safe harbour?
Do we want to flee to a cabin on a mountain lake? .... .... a Gilf Island? ...... an inland city? ....... all the way to the Prairies?
Where do we flee to?
Which route do we flee along?
What type of airplane do we need?
Do we want a low-compression engine that will burn automobile gas or marina gas?
Do we want old-school magnetos and gyro instruments I case an EMP destroys modern electronics?

Mission Aviation Fellowship pilots could provide plenty of advice on how to fly and survive in crumbling, third-world countries.
