Although this is a more complex motor (eg vvt), it should have the capacity to run direct drive.
Assuming 1/2 hp per CI, at 3.6 l that is about 110 hp.
It has coil-on-plug ignition, which I like, but the VVT just adds weight and complexity, and running direct drive you would never see enough revs for it to be much benefit.
I would fix the cam timing (remove the actuators if possible), and go to aftermarket EFI (microsquirt maybe).
So : 110 hp, DD, no turbo heat to deal with :
Would it be too heavy?
Could you mount an extension bearing to the case ?
