Hi folks,
Having been gently chided for not sharing recent ballroom successes, I thought I would share a rather scary eye operation I underwent last week.
Basically, a thin film was growing on the back of my left eye, severely reducing the vision in that eye, and making it impossible to correct with spectacles, and posing a significant risk to my being able to continue flying. Unfortunately, the optometrist didn't pick it up, and neither did the surgeon I consulted for cataract surgery. Glenda (wife) suggested I attend a second cataract surgeon (just as a matter of course). I did so, and he refused to accept that my left eye was just buggered and couldn't be corrected with lenses. That was when he discovered the film growing on the back of the eye.
The surgery wasn't pleasant - they remove the fluid from the eye, go in with scalpals and foreceps and peel the film off. All under local anaesthetic! They then fill the eye up with saline and send you home. Fortunately I was so full of happy juice that I didn't even know when they started or when they finished.
I've just come back from my 1-week checkup, and all is well. Healing nicely, and I can resume all normal activities. And my vision is improving daily.
I'll get to fly the Razorback yet...
Cheers,
Duncan
